House Passes Advance Funding Bill for VA

The House gave final approval to HR 1016, a bill that would provide funding one year in advance for veteran’s medical programs, starting with fiscal 2011.  Advance funding would apply to medical services and support and facility programs.  Funds for benefits such as disability compensation and the GI Bill are not subject to disruptions because they do not come from annual appropriations.  To read this article in full, please go to: http://www.armytimes.com/news/2009/10/military_va_advancefunding_100809w/

House OKs Tax Breaks For Military Homeowners

The Servicemembers Home Ownership Tax Act of 2009 would give deployed Servicemembers extra time to qualify for an $8,000 homebuyer tax credit for first-time purchasers.  This offer expires on December 1 and would exempt those forced to move by military orders from having to give back the money if they sell a home after owning it for less than three years.  The bill also would exempt from federal income taxes the financial aid provided to Servicemembers under the expanded Homeowners Assistance Program, which helps those forced to sell a home at depressed prices because of government ordered moves. The bill, HR 3590, goes to the Senate where it will be referred to the Senate Finance Committee that is responsible for tax-related legislation.  To read this article in full, go to: http://www.armytimes.com/news/2009/10/military_homeownerhelp_taxfree_100809w/

Vets Groups Join to Assist GI Bill Students

As the Veterans Affairs Department (VA) begins issuing emergency checks to students waiting for Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, two veterans groups are coordinating efforts to help those attending remote schools get immediate assistance. Veterans of Foreign Wars, one of the nation’s oldest veterans groups, and Student Veterans of America, one of the newest, are coordinating efforts to provide transportation to VA regional benefits offices for students who need financial help now and cannot wait for the check to be sent. VA officials said Friday they expect it will take about six days for checks to be sent to those who apply online — three days for processing and three days for mail transit. The payments are a stop gap measure to help students enrolled for the fall term whose living stipends under the new GI Bill have been delayed. The VA website has details about online applications and details about what paperwork and identification are needed to pick up a check from a regional benefits office. A special invite from Janice and Glenn Davis, owners of King's Hill Inn in South Paris.

We would like to give a free overnight stay to each Maine soldier returning from the warfront overseas and also offer a 28% discount to all military personnel stationed around the world."28% discount offered is in honor of our 28yr old son serving in the Air force"

The free night would be for any Maine soldier "and his significant other"

who is stationed in Maine or whose family is still in Maine and who has recently returned from the war. All they would need to do is call for availability and ask for the discount or free night and bring their return orders and ID with them.

Our goal is to pamper the couple and provide a peaceful, relaxing stay with a seven course breakfast. We promise them the best, quietest night's sleep with their loved one, far from the cold battlefield.

Please check out their website at http://kingshillinn.com/index.html and check it out. You can take a virtual tour of this beautiful Inn....you will be impressed.
