Public Affairs Office
MAJ Michael R. Steinbuchel, Public Affairs Officer
MISSION: The Public Affairs Office fulfills the Maine National Guard’s obligation to keep the American people and the Maine National Guard community informed by providing timely and accurate information. It establishes the conditions that lead to confidence in the Maine National Guard and its readiness to conduct operations in peacetime and war.
VISION: Members of the Maine National Guard are the most effective communicators of our story and it’s the Maine National Guard’s past dedication and present day courage that adds to our rich legacy in American History.
The National Guard is the oldest component of the Armed Forces of the United States and one of the nation's longest-enduring institutions, celebrating its 370th birthday on December 13, 2006. The Maine National Guard traces its history back to the earliest English colonies in North America through the establishment of Popham Colony in 1607 and it continues to ensure the safety and security of the American people in Iraq, Afghanistan and throughout the world.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES:
- Truth is paramount. Trust and confidence in America’s military and its conduct of operations result when external and internal audiences understand the military and the reasons for its actions, decisions and policies. It involves informing the American people about the military culture. The quickest way to destroy credibility is to misrepresent the truth.
- Servicemembers and their families come first. Internal audiences include Soldiers, Airman, civilian employees, retirees and all affiliated family members throughout the military components. These audiences musst be thoroughly and appropriately informed to ensure maximum effectiveness and the highest sustainable morale. The information needs of Soldiers, families, civilian employees, retirees and employers must be considered first.
- Telling our story and preserving Maine’s military heritage is our mandate. As the Maine National Guard supports stability operations and military campaigns throughout the globe; it is critical to provide accurate and timely information about the Maine National Guard and its operations because it significantly impacts mission accomplishment.
