Become a Warrant Officer

Promotion Eligibility

Each MOS may have further military or civilian educational requirements. These are the basic requirements that apply to all warrant officers.

Requirements
RANK TIME IN GRADE EDUCATION
CW2 2 years as a WO1 Warrant Officer Basic Course (WOBC) (within 2 years of initial appointment as WO1)
CW3 5 years as a CW2

OR

4 years if currently in a CW3-CW5 slot
Action Officer Course (ST 7000) and MOS specific Warrant Officer Advanced Course (WOAC) or Senior Warrant Officer Training (SWOT).

OR

If no WOAC or SWOT in a specialty exists, Warrant officer Technical and Tactical Certificate (WOTTC)or WOBC and the Action Officer Course.
CW4 6 years as a CW3

OR



5 years if currently in a CW4-CW5 slot
DMOS WOAC or equivalent SWOT. If no WOAC or SWOT exists in the MOS, then WOBC or WOTTC is acceptable.

Warrant Officer Staff Course (WOSC).
CW5 5 years as a CW4 Warrant Officer Senior Staff Course (WOSSC).

Action Officer Course

A mandatory non-resident course that must be completed prior to attending your proponent/branch school WOAC training. It is completed on-line via the Internet, and provides relevant training in organization and management techniques, communication skills, preparing and staffing documents, conducting meetings and interviews, problem solving, time management, writing, coordinating activities, and ethics.

Warrant Officer Advanced Course

The Warrant Officer Advanced Course (WOAC) focuses on advanced technical training and common leader development subjects designed to prepare officers for assignment in CW3 level positions. This course is individually developed by each proponent and consists of non-resident and resident training.

A 4-week course professional development course. Only WOCC teaches WOSC. It is not available as a correspondence course.

Warrant Officer Senior Staff Course

A two-week course attended by the Army's most senior Warrant Officers. Only WOCC teaches WOSSC. It is not available as a correspondence course.
