Being a Warrant Officer


Rank and Promotion

Warrant officers are ranked above enlisted ranks (E1-E9), but below regular officers (O1-O10).

There are five grades within the Army Warrant Officer Corps. New warrant officers are initially appointed as a WO1. On promotion to CW2 (after two years), warrant officers are commissioned by the President and have the same legal status as their traditional commissioned officer counterparts. Promotions to CW3, CW4 and CW5 are given on a case by case basis roughly every 4-6 years. More info on promotions.

Bonuses and Special Benefits

  • Accession bonus of $10,000 after completion of WOBC.

  • Warrant Officers holding the rank of SFC for 2 years prior to Appointment may be promoted to CW2 upon completion of WOBC.

Obligation

Warrant Officers incur a base two-year contractual obligation upon appointment. All soldiers incur contractual obligation for military training.

  • Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) — 6 years.
  • Courses 16 to 30 days: 1 year.
  • Courses 31 to 90 days: 2 years.
  • Courses 91 to 139 days: 3 years.
  • Courses 140 or more: 4 years.
